Vicuña
Unique
Vicuñas are beautiful animals that live in the high grasslands and mountainous regions in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and parts of Argentina and Chile. They show off an extremely elegant and thick golden brown fur coat and have a white underbelly. They are a part of the camelid family which consists of alpacas, llamas and guanacos as well. However they are the rarest of the fur and a protected species. There are less than 350,000 vicuñas in the wild.

Rare

Vicuña fur can be closest compared to cashmere. However, it is much softer and rarer than cashmere and considered a better quality fabric, hence it being 10 times the price. Acquiring vicuña fur also requires a special license and can only be obtained through ethical and sustainable means as they are a protected and endangered species. Vicuñas produce around half a kilo of fur every 3 years, making their fur extremely rare and valuable. Their fur is extremely light and even finer than that of an alpaca. Their fur is 13-15 microns compared to alpacas which are 17-22, making their fur even softer. Their fur is used to make scarves, coats, jumpers and cardigans and is extremely warm and comfortable.
